Make the Most of Every Opportunity
By Greg Sanders
A few years ago, a team from our church was coming back from a mission’s trip and half of the team got held up at customs in the Miami airport. We were supposed to have a two-hour layover but customs took so long that half of our team just barely made it to the gate on time. The other half, well let me say, I have never seen them run so hard. Being with the group that made it to the plane first, I pleaded with the gate attendant to give them another few minutes over and over again. The next plane home would not depart until the next day and I knew were all ready to get home. That plane represented our only opportunity of getting home that day. They did begrudgingly hold the plane for the rest of our team and we did make it home
Opportunities come and go, but they are not all equal. We all ran for the plane because we knew this was the opportunity we wanted. We knew there would be other planes but our eagerness to get home drove us to run hard to make it to the gate. I wonder if we live with the same eagerness to make the most of the opportunities God gives us each day.
Colossians 4:5 says to “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.” Every person you meet, every conversation you have, and every day you are given is an opportunity given to you by God. Make the most of it. Making the most of your opportunities today opens the door for God to use you in even greater ways tomorrow. Jesus told His disciples in John 4:35 “Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”
Today’s Challenge: Make the most of every opportunity God gives you today. Take the opportunity to spend time with Him and represent Him to others. Don’t waste today. Make the most of it.
Blessings,
Greg
