There are some people who I love to hear pray. The combination of their heart for God, use of vocabulary, and authenticity is so compelling that I just know their prayer must be effective. I am not one of those people. When I pray, I often hope that no one but God is listening because my vocabulary is not only limited but also flavored with my Arkansas dialect. The good news is that it is not your ability to put together impressive stanzas of prayers that gets God’s attention. The Bible mentions several times that God even hears the prayer in our hearts.

Genesis 24:45 says “Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’ 46“She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’ So I drank, and she watered the camels also.

As soon as Abraham’s servant finished praying his silent prayer, God answered. It did not take great fanfare or the like to capture God’s attention. He is attentive to each and every prayer of His people whether that prayer is shouted from the rooftop or whispered in the heart. This encourages and allows me to fill my day with prayer. One person said, “When I pray, consequences occur. When I don’t pray, they don’t happen.” However you want to look at it one thing is obvious: God moves when people pray.

Three things that silent prayer brings to your life:

Since God hears your silent prayers, you can fill your day with prayer. Silent prayer allows you to fulfill the command of 1 Thessalonians 5:16 to pray without ceasing. Your whole day can be an ongoing concert of prayer.

Since God hears your silent prayer, you can live with constant expectancy. I love that Abraham’s servant recognized that God answered his prayer immediately. We can live with that same expectancy. I know that sometimes God works over time rather than in a moment, but you can expect God to answer your silent prayers.

Since God hears your silent prayers, no place is off limits to His intervention. I realized that prayer has been banned from many schools. Prayer has been banned from many workplaces. However, prayer can never be relegated out of your heart. Only you can do that. As long as prayer is in your heart, God’s intervention can take place in your life.

Today’s Challenge: Fill your day with silent prayer. Realize that anywhere you are is a place where God can break in, show up, and intervene on your behalf.
