Make the Most of the Opportunities God Gives You

Step 3: Remember every choice is an opportunity to honor God.

1 Samuel 24:4…….So David crept forward and cut off a piece of the hem of Saul’s robe. 5 But then David’s conscience began bothering him because he had cut Saul’s robe. 6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king. I shouldn’t attack the Lord’s anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.”

The question to ask when faced with an opportunity is, “Which choice brings honor to God?” David was serious about honoring God. He realized that this opportunity to harm Saul was also an opportunity to honor him. David had a right in everyone’s mind to take matters into his own hands, but rather than harm Saul he chose to honor him.

The truth of the matter is that you have never honored anyone until you disagreed with him or her. Honoring your spouse does not mean that you encourage them when they get everything right. It means you honor them when they get it wrong also. Sometimes you may even disagree with the choice that God is leading you to make. However, when your instinct tells you to do the opposite of what God says, that moment becomes the first chance to honor His ways above your own. Remember that you never lose when you honor God.

Just because you have the right to do something does not make it right to do. David had the right to kill Saul but instead chose to honor God instead. I heard the story the other day of a 19-year-old boy who went to his father and said he want to get married. The father said, “First say that you are sorry.” The boy objected and said, “I have not done anything wrong.” This conversation happened over and over again for several hours. Finally, the boy said, “Ok, dad. I am sorry.” The dad said, “Now that you can apologize for no good reason, you’re ready to get married.” That story makes me laugh but it also reminds me that as long as “your rights” are the most important thing in life, you will never experience the most valuable things in life.” Every choice is an opportunity to lay down our own rights and honor God.

Choose to honor God and His ways even when they come into conflict with what seems natural to you. Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

Today’s Challenge: When opportunities come, remember to make the choice that brings honor to God. When you choose to honor Him, He takes responsibility for meeting your needs and leading you into His best. You never lose when you honor God.
