Do what Jesus says even when you don’t know why He said it?
By Greg Sanders
Luke 5: 3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat. 4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered and said, Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break;
Jesus climbs into Simon’s boat and ask Him to put the boat out into the water a little ways and without explanation Simon Does what Jesus request. Because Simon obeyed, Jesus was able to speak across the water to hundreds of people that day. Immediately following the sermon Jesus gave Simon a second command. Put the boat out deeper and you will catch fish. Without explaining why this hour would be different then all the other hours they had been fishing, Jesus tells them that they will catch fish if they obey.
The fact is that everyone is more comfortable and even motivated to do things when they understand why they are doing it. Twice here in these verses Jesus instructed Simon “What” to do without explaining all the “why” behind it. Simon even protested a little bit about putting out those nets they had worked so hard to prepare and put away for the next day. However, he did what Jesus said even thought he did not know why Jesus was saying it. Simon’s willingness to do what Jesus said without knowing why He said it opened up the door to tremendous blessing. You don’t have to understand the “why” to do the “what.”
Along your spiritual journey Jesus is going to ask you to do something’s that you may not immediately understand why He is telling you to do it. He may ask you to serve someone you don’t think is worthy. He may ask you to give to someone you don’t think is a good steward. He may ask you to show kindness to someone who has been a jerk to you in the past. Don’t allow what you don’t understand keep you form doing what God has instructed you to do. The blessing of God comes in the obedience not in the grasping of why He had you to do it. You must be ok with the idea that Jesus may instruct you to do something here on earthy that you may never understand the reason until you get to heaven. But your lack of understanding will not prevent you from receiving His reward.
Today’s Challenge: Obey even when you don’t know why. Don’t allow the things you don’t know keep you form the things you do know Jesus has called you to do. Obedience to Him invites His blessing to your life. |
