Misdirected Zeal
By Greg Sanders

Romans 10:1 Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. 2 I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal.

Passion is a good thing. I am convinced that a person should be passionate about all things in which he or she engages. If you are a parent, you should be passionate about your kids. It you are a teacher, then you should be passionate about educating students. If you are a factory worker, you should be passionate about producing a quality product. I believe that God’s people should be the most passionate people on the planet.

Romans reminds us that passion undirected will become misdirected. People were passionate about God but had allowed their passion to blind them to the free gift of salvation that Jesus came to provide. We have all seen people who do things in the name of God that is far from the heart of God. How do people get so far off track? It is often not a lack of sincerity but rather a lack of conformity to the whole council of God. 2 Timothy 1:7 says “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” God has given you the ability to channel your passion in His direction.

Today’s Challenge: Realize that the Spirit and the Word of God must direct our passion. Pray and ask the Lord to infuse your life with His passion and His direction for your life. Make sure your passion is always in step with His passion.
