Through the Storm
By Greg Sanders

Luke 8:22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. 25And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him. 23But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. 24And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.

Did you know that when you follow Jesus, life could get a little bumpy? Many believe that following Jesus is like an immediate escape hatch from all the realities of life. However, Jesus does something different than taking us out of reality. He gives us the power to live an abundant life through the harsh realities of life. The following truths from this passage can help you keep your faith when life gets hard.

The presence of Jesus is no guarantee against the storms of life. It was Jesus who said in John 16:33, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” Though Jesus may not keep you out of the storms of life, He will keep you through the storm.

Commanded provision follows commanded action. If Jesus has spoken about a destination, then you must learn to trust Him in the journey. Jesus had commanded the disciples to go to the other side. I am convinced that in His infinite wisdom He knew the storm was a coming before He gave the command. Yet He gave the command anyway. Jesus already had a plan for the storm that had not yet appeared. Jesus has a plan for the storms of your life as well.

Each leg of the journey reveals more of God’s power to you. You will not discover more of God’s power by sitting in safe environments. It is as you walk with Him through the unknown and the uncertainties of life that you discover Him in a greater way.

Today’s Challenge: Realize the road you are on today is an invitation to know the power of Jesus in a greater way. It is in sinking ships that you discover the sustaining power of Jesus.
