Are you a Backseat Driver?
By Greg Sanders
Have you ever had a backseat driver ride with you? Backseat drivers are quick to point out things they think you don’t see, tell you things you already know, and criticize every move you make. A backseat driver can turn a normally competent driver into a nervous wreck. When I encounter such people, I remind them that this car has only one driver seat and that they are not in it!
Your life has only one driver’s seat. Who is in the driver’s seat of your life? Is it you? Is it the Holy Spirit or is it some other desire, some other ambition that is driving your life? If the direction of your life has been less than you desired, perhaps it is time to examine who is doing the real directing of your life.
Galatians 5:16 says, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”
If your life is craving the things of the sinful nature more than things of the Spirit then that is evidence that there has been a change made in the driver’s seat of your life. Paul is teaching that if we let the Holy Spirit guide us, He will be guiding us away from our sinful cravings and towards the things of God. Your job is not to put the Holy Spirit in the driver’s seat and then coach Him along the journey. Your job is to release the controls to Him and trust Him as He guides you through this life.
Today’s Challenge: Stop trying to be a backseat driver to the Holy Spirit. Trust where He is leading you and enjoy the journey. If your life is heading the wrong direction, make a driver swap today. Allow Him to guide your life. |
